Slack 12.1: Driver ATI Radeon 9600 - Monitor HP 16/9

Ciao a tutti
da oggi sto combattendo con la 12.1 e non riesco a configurare la mia vecchia scheda Radeon 9600 sul monitor HP w1907v (16/9), definizione 1400x900.

Il monitor rimane ai canonici 1024x768 e l'installazione dei driver ATI scaricati dal sito, non portano a nulla di buono pur ritoccando il file xorg.conf.

Il log dell'installazione dei driver (ati-driver-installer-8-5-x86.x86_64.run) /usr/share/ati/fglrx-install.log è di seguito:

Qualcuno saprebbe dirmi cosa/come dovrei procedere ?

Altrimenti vai a modificare le "Modes" in xorg.conf, aggiungendo 1400x900 all'inizio, per ogni depth (caricando il driver fglrx nell'apposita sezione).

stando al log la compilazione fallisce e quindi il driver non funziona. Ad un certo punto ti viene consigliato di guardare il README lo hai fatto?

Come ho consigliato a pigeta in chat (penso che sia tu) utilizza i driver 8.4 i nuovi 8.5 hanno parecchi problemi

Ho scaricato i driver ati-driver-installer-8-4-x86.x86_64.run e nel file di log non compaiono più errori.
Passo a manopolare xorg.conf per aggiungere la risoluzione che mi interessa (1440x900) ma non la sente...resta a 1024x768.

Da quel che ho capito, i driver ATI sembrerebbero installati ma non lo sono.
Infatti:
Driver "vesa"
e non fglrx

...invece il monitor è stato riconosciuto:

sostituisci i driver vesa con fglrx e vedi se parte, altrimenti prova i radeon, se non ho capito male la tua scheda ha un chipset RV350, quindi dovrebbe essere supportata... un'altra cosa, se hai impostato bene le frequenze di hsync e vrefresh, puoi togliere @60 dal mode per il 24 bit... X utilizzerà da solo la frequenza corretta...

stavo per dimenticarmi, quando si copincollano dei files così lunghi è meglio metterli nel tag code, in questo modo eviti di dover diminuire il carattere e tutto è più leggibile (oltre ad evitare di rendere il post kilometrico)... ho dovuto zoomare varie volte per leggere tutto quello che hai riportato (ho qualche problemino di vista e non sono l'unico)...

Allora, alcune cose devono essere corrette.

Prima di tutto hai impostato frequenze di refresh errate.
Dal manuale del tuo monitor reperibile qui, User's Guide,
pagina 44 per la versione in lingua inglese e 46 per quella
in italiano, risulta

Vertical Refresh Rate (analog mode): 50 to 76 Hz
...

Da notare che nel tuo X.0.log è scritto

Ranges: V min: 50 V max: 76 Hz, H min: 24 H max: 83 kHz, PixClock max 140 MHz

Secondo me è necessario controllare che l'installazione dei
driver proprietari sia andata a buon fine provando il driver
fglrx: per ora hai usato vesa. Poi puoi pensare alla risoluzione.

Il mio suggerimento consiste nel leggere questa ottima guida,
almeno la parte relativa ai driver proprietari (installazione e
configurazione di X). E' un riferimento utile.

Detto ciò credo sia utile procedere con un xorg.conf pulito e chiaro,
ecco perché ho provato a "sistemare" il tuo. Ho rimosso tutti i
commenti per accorciare il file.
Praticamente occorre:

1) fare un copia-incolla del testo che segue, salvare il tutto con
nome "xorg.conf", copiarlo in /etc/X11/ avendo cura di fare un
backup del tuo attuale xorg.conf;
2) provare la configurazione lanciando startx

Se il file è corretto e l'installazione dei driver proprietari è andata
a buon fine dovrebbe funzionare tutto (anche se non ancora con la
risoluzione che vuoi tu).

Premessa: con i driver ATI io ho pochissima esperienza (praticamente nulla),
quindi chiedo ad altri utenti più esperti di controllare l'xorg.conf.
Il file che segue è modellato sul mio xorg.conf, creato con xorgconfig,
Slackware 12.0.

ecco come ho risolto la questione:
ho lanciato il comando <<xorgsetup>> ponendo attenzione alle frequenze orizzontale/verticale del monitoring.

Lanciato lo startx, come per magia vedo una definizione decente (quella che cercavo: 1440x900).
I driver utilizzati non sono gli ATI (fglrx) ma radeon come si evince dal file di configurazione:
