jack - ma come funziona???

Ragazzi, ho seri problemi con Jack!
Vorrei usare i software con gli effetti per chitarra, che però richiedono jack.
Allora installo e avvio jack! o almeno ci provo!!!
Faccio qualche ricerca ma non riesco a trovare nulla che indichi la situazione chiaramente. Non ho applicazioni che utilizzano la scheda audio e quindi alsa al momento, ho chiuso anche kmix...ma nulla!!
Lo chiedo a voi...per usare jack devo applicare le patch rt al kernel?
io attualmente uso 2.6.32-ck1 preempt
